Fate seems to be set against my updating on a regular basis- between trying to find my lost bus pass and coming down with yet another fever/cold combination that has me stuck in bed for over a week, I’ve done little that’s worth writing about.
I managed to get a replacement bus pass and had a very British experience with it all. I called one office and was told that replacement passes weren’t given. I had friends who had gotten bus passes before, and they all got a piece of paper with their pass that told them how to get a replacement. I didn’t get any papers about that with mine. One of my friends got the number for me (which was apparently a Secret Number because this number wasn’t found anywhere online or in any of the paperwork they gave me). I called it and they got a replacement pass to me for the [relatively small] fee of £15. I’m just glad I was able to get it replaced, but I probably should have just gone ahead and expected that I would have to call several numbers in the same company, hear conflicting tales, and find things out the hard way before getting what I wanted. Ah well.
My birthday was on Tuesday- it was a really good day (it wasn’t til the end of the day that I got too sick to get out of bed for the next five days…) Tuesdays is the one day I have lecture, so I got in to the studio a bit before everything started. Someone had seen on facebook that it was my birthday, so it didn’t take long for everyone to hear about it and start telling me happy birthday. When we got into lecture everyone sang to me, which was really sweet and just a little bit embarrassing. After lunch a few of the girls left a present on my desk- a box of chocolates, a strawberry cheesecake, and a candle. After lecture finished up, we went the the pub around the corner for food and drinks. Everyone on the course came out for a bit (so for a while there were about 20 of us taking up a big corner of the pub) and when I left at 10 p.m. there were still 6 or 7 people left. We had a really great evening- it was wonderful to get a chance to have really good conversations with a few people that I hadn’t had a chance to spend much time with before (including my professor).
Like I said, I left the pub around 10 p.m. On the bus on the way home I started feeling really, really tired and could tell that I was starting to get sick. I spent the whole night with a pretty high fever and have spent the past five days in bed with a fever and a bad cough. It’s Sunday now- I’m starting to feel better, but I’ve lost so much work time. I fly back to the States on Wednesday and hopefully I’ll be loads better in time for my 23 hour journey. I’m hoping to be well enough to go in to the studio for a bit tomorrow- I have made a few new pieces that I’ll photograph and put up here to give you an idea of what I’m working on at the moment. I’ll write again soon…
